Meet Gilbert — one of the most beautiful goats in this world, and one who arrived at HAAS carrying the kind of fear that only deep cruelty can create. Before he found us, Gilbert suffered severe head-blunt trauma at the hands of a human who chose violence over kindness. The damage wasn’t only physical. His trust was shattered. His spirit was terrified.

For a long time, Gilbert wouldn’t come near anyone – not for food, not for help, not even for survival. He would bolt the moment we stepped through the gate. To him, hands weren’t a symbol of love… they were weapons.

Gaining Gilbert’s trust became one of the greatest feats of compassion this sanctuary has ever known. It took a full village – patient, steady, and endlessly gentle. I spent hours upon hours sitting with him, whispering only softness and speaking every compliment his handsome, dapper self deserved. But no matter how long I held feed in my hands, he refused. Hands had hurt him before. He wasn’t risking it again.

So we found a different way.

I began feeding him carrots from my mouth, with my hands tucked behind my back. And just like that – Gilbert leaned in. It became our ritual. Soon, volunteers joined in too: hidden hands, slow movements, tender voices, and all the baby carrots a sweet soul could nibble from our lips.

Little by little – over months, then a full year -Gilbert began to trust again. He chose a small circle of people whose hands he finally allowed near his beard, his cheeks, his head. Every gentle scratch became a triumph. Every small step forward was a miracle.

Knowing how deeply humans failed him – so much so that he nearly lost his eyesight -was almost unbearable. As the founder, stories like Gilbert’s can drop me to my knees. But Gilbert didn’t just heal because of us. He healed us too.

He softened all the sharp edges of my heart. He taught me patience in a way no book ever could. He turned me into an instant sap for every scared, broken-hearted goat that comes after him.

Every second spent earning Gilbert’s trust was one of the greatest triumphs of my entire rescue journey. Gilbert stands as living proof that love slow, consistent, unwavering love – can mend even the deepest wounds.
