Psalm was the very first rescue of Hidden Acres, and the heartbeat that started it all. A massive, breathtaking Thoroughbred gelding, he had once been a proud dressage competitor. But after sustaining an injury, he faced the cruelest kind of abandonment – left behind at the barn where he was stalled, relying solely on the compassion of a barn manager who quietly cared for him for nearly a decade.

When the barn fell on hard times and had to close, Psalm was scheduled to be euthanized on December 31, 2017. Dozens of rescues declined to take him. He was out of time. Out of options. Out of hope.

Except for me, I received a text from a friend sharing his story knowing I was “possibly” looking for land.

So I said yes – without land, without stalls, without knowing exactly how I’d do it. What I did know was that his life mattered.

His rescue happened before HAAS even had a home. In truth, Psalm led us to this land. He became the reason I searched, the reason I dreamed bigger, and the reason I committed to creating a sanctuary where compassion would always win.

Psalm was majestic beyond words – towering at 17½ hands, gentle, wise, soulful. He was my beautiful best friend, and he taught me what true kindness looks like. He taught me why second chances matter. He taught me the language of gratitude and the power of presence.

At the age of 32, Psalm passed from an inoperable sheath infection. I spent his final two weeks sleeping in the stall beside him each night, holding space for the same soul who had changed my life.

I can’t kiss his velvet nose anymore or whisper the farm gossip into his ears, but his spirit reigns over this sanctuary every single day. Psalm is our beginning, our heartbeat, and the quiet reminder that love like his never leaves – it only leads.
